The lactic acid. It appears in your muscles when you're exercising or doing vigorous work to produce more energy into your muscles to help you work harder. And when your body can't remove it quick enough, then it just sits there making it harder for you to move and the muscles become very, very sore. I found this out the first time I went rock climbing. My arms were sore for days.
